Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has sparked controversy by questioning the bowling methods of Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh. These accusations come after Arshdeep’s impressive performance of 3/37 against Australia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Super 8 match.
Inzamam questions Arshdeep’s reverse swing
During a talk show appearance, Inzamam raised doubts about the legitimacy of Arshdeep’s bowling, specifically focusing on his ability to reverse-swing the ball in the 16th over. “Arshdeep Singh was reverse-swinging the ball in the 15th over. Isn’t that too early for a new ball?” he questioned. “This means the ball was ready for reverse swing by the 12th or 13th over. Umpires should be alert to such things,” Inzamam added.
It’s important to note that Arshdeep has been a standout performer throughout the tournament, currently at the second place in the list of the most wickets. However, Inzamam’s comments were further amplified by former Pakistan cricketer Saleem Malik, who appeared alongside him on the show.

Saleem Malik implies bias in umpiring calls
Malik suggested a potential bias towards certain teams when it comes to enforcing bowling regulations.
“Inzy [Inzamam], I always say this, eyes are kept shut when it comes to some teams, and India is one of those teams,” Malik claimed. He recounted a personal experience from his playing days where he was penalized for questioning a similar situation.
Inzamam went on to suggest that a Pakistani bowler achieving similar feats might have attracted more scrutiny. “We know reverse swing very well,” he stated. “And if Arshdeep can reverse the ball in the 15th over, it means some serious work has been done before.” He acknowledged the possibility of natural factors contributing to the ball’s condition but emphasized the need for vigilance by umpires.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to respond to Inzamam’s allegations. Arshdeep meanwhile, continues to be a vital cog in India’s bowling attack as they take on England in the semifinals. Cricket fans will be watching closely to see if these accusations have any impact on the remainder of the tournament.
