England secured a convincing 8-wicket victory over West Indies in a high-scoring encounter at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia. This win strengthened their position in Group 2 of the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
England bowlers keep West Indies batters in check
Opting to bowl first, England kept the West Indies batsmen in check for the most part. While Johnson Charles (38) and Nicholas Pooran (36) provided stability at the top of the order, Rovman Powell’s explosive knock of 36 runs off just 17 balls propelled the Windies innings to a respectable total of 180/4 in their 20 overs. Sherfane Rutherford (28 not out) also added valuable late runs.
For England, the bowling attack shared the spoils. Adil Rashid (1/21) and Moeen Ali (1/15) were economical, while Jofra Archer (1/34) and Liam Livingstone (1/20) picked up crucial wickets.
Phil Salt and Jonny Bairstow take England over the finish line
Chasing a target of 181, England openers Philip Salt and Jos Buttler got off to a flying start. Salt, in particular, was unstoppable, smashing 87 runs off just 47 deliveries, including seven fours and five towering sixes. Jonny Bairstow (48 not out) provided excellent support with a quickfire knock, ensuring England reached the target comfortably in the 18th over with only 2 wickets lost.
Salt’s dominant batting display earned him a well-deserved Player of the Match award.
