Babar Azam’s insightful chat with AB de Villiers
In the lead-up to the T20 World Cup, former South African captain AB de Villiers hosted Babar on his YouTube channel for an in-depth interview. The two cricketing stars discussed various aspects of the game and shared personal stories.
Babar opened up about his challenging journey to becoming a professional cricketer. He credited his family, particularly his father, for supporting his dream despite financial hardships. The Pakistan cricket icon reminisced about his early days playing state cricket, tennis ball, and tape-ball cricket, highlighting the struggles and dedication that shaped his career.
“My family played a big role because, when I started out, we did not have a lot of money. We were not like a rich family. When I started out, I played state cricket and played tennis ball cricket and tape-ball cricket every Saturday night. We used to be 2 teams and play together. After some time, I told my father I wanted to start professional cricket, so he said ok, let us do it. So it was very difficult when I began my professional cricket journey,” Babar said.

De Villiers defends Babar against troll
During the interview, a fan attempted to mock Babar’s English, writing in the YouTube comments section, “ABD hardly control his laughing. Babar Azam speaking in English,” accompanied by tears of joy emojis. De Villiers, known for his sportsmanship, responded sharply to the troll. De Villiers wrote, “His English is infinitely better than my Urdu. And his batting is excellent, which is what matters more, I believe.” This response from the Proteas legend highlighted the importance of respecting players for their skills and contributions to the game, rather than their language abilities.
