The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 has reached a critical phase with the Super 8 matches in full swing. Top contenders like India, Australia, England, West Indies and South Africa are vying for a spot in the semifinals. However, only four teams will advance, making each game increasingly crucial.
Once the Super 8 matches conclude, the semifinalists will be determined based on their group standings. The eight remaining teams are divided into two groups of four. The top two teams from each group will move on to the semifinals.
Criteria for semifinal qualifications
If more than two teams tie on points, several criteria will be used to decide the semifinalists. The team with the most wins will be ranked higher. If teams are tied in both points and wins, the team with the superior Net Run Rate (NRR) will advance. If NRR is also tied, head-to-head results will be considered. If still tied, the higher ICC Men’s T20I Ranking will determine the qualifier, based on standings as of May 31, 2024.
Group 2 of the Super 8s is particularly competitive, featuring strong teams like South Africa, England, and the West Indies. South Africa has won both their Super 8 games but has a weak NRR, keeping England and West Indies in the running for semifinal spots if they win their remaining matches.

England
The defending champions, England, narrowly made it to the Super 8s due to favorable outcomes in earlier matches. They started strong with an 8-wicket win over the West Indies, boosting their NRR significantly. However, they lost their second Super 8 match to South Africa by 7 runs. With West Indies’ commanding win over the USA, England must secure a big win against the USA to ensure a spot in the semifinals.
West Indies
After a strong group stage with four wins, the West Indies stumbled against England in their first Super 8 match. They bounced back with a convincing victory over the USA in their second match. The West Indies now face a must-win game against South Africa to keep their semifinal hopes alive. Anything less than a win will eliminate them from contention.
