A nail-biting low-scoring thriller unfolded at the Providence Stadium in Guyana as Uganda edged past Papua New Guinea by 3 wickets in Match 9 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
This was Uganda’s first-ever win in the mega ICC tournament.
Papua New Guinea struggles with the bat
Uganda elected to bowl first and their decision proved to be a good one. Papua New Guinea batters struggled against the Ugandan bowling attack, with none of them managing to score a significant total. Only Lega Siaka (12), Hiri Hiri (15) and Kiplin Doriga (12) reached double digits as the entire team was bundled out for a meager 77 runs in 19.1 overs.
Frank Nsubuga was the pick of the Ugandan bowlers, claiming two wickets for just 4 runs.
Uganda chases down target with 10 balls to spare
Chasing a modest target, Uganda’s start was shaky as they lost their top three batsmen cheaply. However, a fighting knock from Riazat Ali Shah (33 runs off 56 balls) steadied the ship. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Uganda kept chipping away at the target. Juma Miyagi (13) provided valuable support to Shah, and with some late hitting, Uganda eventually chased down the target with ten balls to spare, finishing on 78/7 in 18.2 overs.
Alei Nao (2/16) and Norman Vanua (2/19) were the most successful bowlers for PNG, but their efforts were not enough to secure victory.
For his crucial knock that anchored the chase, Riazat Ali Shah was deservedly awarded the Player of the Match award.

🇵🇬PNG: 77/10 (19.1)
🇺🇬Uganda: 78/7 (18.2)🏆Uganda you did it! First win in a T20 World Cup in just the second match and that in a debut tournament. A beautiful story. A win for the ages. Despite the early wobble—26/5– the sixth wicket partnership of 35 runs ensured Uganda…
