The West Indies laid down a dominant marker in their last T20 World Cup 2024 group stage match against Afghanistan on Monday, June 17.
Record-breaking powerplay for West Indies against Afghanistan
Batting first, the Windies unleashed a record-breaking powerplay assault, amassing a staggering 92 runs in the first six overs.
This explosive start shattered the previous T20 World Cup record of 91 runs, set by the Netherlands against Ireland back in 2014. Opener Johnson Charles and No.3 Nicholas Pooran led the charge, taking the Afghan bowling attack to the cleaners with some scintillating shot-making.
Azmatullah Omarzai, the Afghan pacer, unwittingly played a part in the record-shattering powerplay. While conceding three sixes and two fours to Pooran, he also coughed up a number of extras, further inflating the Windies’ total.
