In Match 22 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan faced off against Canada at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. Pakistan, having won the toss, opted to bowl first and showcased a dominant performance both with the ball and the bat, securing a comprehensive victory by 7 wickets.

Canada’s struggles with the bat

Canada’s innings got off to a shaky start and never really gained momentum, ending at 106 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. The standout performance came from Aaron Johnson, who fought valiantly with a score of 52 off 44 balls, hitting 4 fours and 4 sixes. However, he received little support from his teammates.

Navneet Dhaliwal (4 off 7), Pargat Singh (2 off 6), and Nicholas Kirton (1 off 6) all fell cheaply. Shreyas Movva and Ravinderpal Singh also struggled, scoring 2 and 0 respectively. Saad Bin Zafar managed a patient 10 off 21, while Kaleem Sana (13 off 14) and Dillon Heyliger (9 off 11) added some runs towards the end but it was not enough to pose a significant challenge.

Pakistan’s bowling dominance

Pakistan’s bowlers were on point from the start, with Mohammad Amir leading the charge. Amir’s impressive figures of 2 for 13 in his 4 overs earned him the Player of the Match award. Haris Rauf also claimed 2 wickets, conceding 26 runs in his 4 overs. Shaheen Afridi (1 for 21) and Naseem Shah (1 for 24) chipped in with key wickets, while Imad Wasim bowled economically, giving away just 19 runs in his 4 overs. The disciplined bowling effort from Pakistan restricted Canada to a modest total, setting a manageable target for their batters.

Pakistan’s steady chase

In response, Pakistan chased down the target of 107 with relative ease, reaching 109 for 3 in 17.3 overs. Mohammad Rizwan anchored the innings with an unbeaten 53 off 53 balls, including 2 fours and 1 six. Babar Azam provided solid support, scoring 33 off 33 balls. Despite a few hiccups with the dismissals of Saim Ayub (6 off 12), Fakhar Zaman (4 off 6), and Usman Khan (2 off 1), Pakistan’s experienced batting lineup ensured there were no major alarms. Rizwan’s steady hand guided Pakistan home, securing a comfortable win.

Canada’s effort with the ball

Canada’s bowlers tried their best to defend the low total. Heyliger was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2 for 18 in his 4 overs, providing brief hope for his team. Jeremy Gordon also bowled well, taking 1 for 17 in his 3.3 overs. However, the lack of wickets from the other bowlers and the small target proved too much to defend. Sana, Bin Zafar, and Junaid Siddiqui were unable to make significant breakthroughs, allowing Pakistan to chase the target with quite a few overs to spare.
