Former fast bowler Dale Steyn became emotional after South Africa secured their spot in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024.

South Africa’s dominant performance against Afghanistan

South Africa, convincingly defeated Rashid Khan’s Afghanistan by NINE wickets in the first semi-final at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. Afghanistan, batting first after winning the toss, were bowled out for a paltry 56 runs in 11.5 overs, with Tabraiz Shamsi and Marco Jansen claiming three wickets each, and Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje taking two wickets apiece.

This total marked both Afghanistan’s lowest in a T20 World Cup semi-final and their lowest ever in T20I history. In response, South Africa chased down the target of 57 runs with ease, reaching 60/1 in just 8.5 overs. Reeza Hendricks remained unbeaten on 29, while Aiden Markram contributed 23 not out.

Steyn’s personal reflections

Steyn, who has been part of several of South Africa’s World Cup campaigns, including the heartbreaking 2015 World Cup semi-final loss to New Zealand, where Grant Elliot hit him for a match-winning six, expressed deep emotion at this achievement. For South Africa, reaching their maiden T20 World Cup final holds immense significance, especially given their history of close calls and near misses in previous tournaments.

Quest for the first T20 World Cup title

South Africa will now await the winner of the second semi-final between England and India to be played at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. The T20 World Cup final is scheduled to take place at Kensington Oval Bridgetown, Barbados. While England and India have both won the T20 World Cup before, South Africa are yet to secure their first title, making this final appearance all the more poignant for their cricketing history.
