Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli has been awarded the prestigious ICC ODI Player of the Year award for 2023. In addition to this honor, he has been named in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year for his exceptional performances throughout the year. The announcement was made in New York as the Indian team prepares for their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) celebrated Kohli’s achievements by sharing a video on social media, showcasing the presentation of his award and cap. This recognition highlights Kohli’s remarkable consistency and prowess in ODI cricket during 2023. Kohli was spotted wearing the prestigious cap and posing with the special trophy.

Kohli’s stellar 2023 performance

Kohli experienced a significant resurgence in 2023, delivering outstanding performances after years of inconsistent form. In 27 ODIs, he amassed 1,377 runs at an impressive average of 72.47 and a strike rate of 99.13, with six centuries and eight fifties in 24 innings. His highest score of the year was an unbeaten 166 and played a pivotal role in India’s Asia Cup 2023 triumph, scoring an unbeaten 122* off 94 balls against Pakistan in a crucial Super Four stage match.

Record-breaking World Cup campaign

Kohli’s form continued in the ODI World Cup as well, where he had a historic campaign. The former India skipper amassed 765 runs in 11 matches at an average of 95.62, including three centuries and six fifties, with a best score of 117. Kohli ended the tournament as the top-scorer, breaking Sachin Tendulkar‘s record for the most runs in a single World Cup edition (673 runs in 2003). Additionally, he also surpassed Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries, scoring his 50th ODI ton against New Zealand in the semifinals.
