Sri Lanka and South Africa locked horns in the low-scoring game at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Monday, June 4. The Proteas triumphed over the Islanders by a margin of six wickets. Remarkably, Sri Lanka’s innings folded at 77 runs within 19.1 overs, while South Africa efficiently chased down the target in 16.2 overs.

Despite a modest target, Sri Lankan bowlers posed difficulties for South Africa. Matheesha Pathirana displayed exceptional skills with the ball, exhibiting remarkable economy by conceding only 12 runs in 3 overs, albeit without claiming a wicket.

During his commendable performance, Pathirana executed an outstanding yorker that left Heinrich Klaasen astonished. In the 12th over of South Africa’s innings, Pathirana unleashed a magnificent swinging yorker at a speed of 151kph. The delivery homed in late on Klaasen’s pads, causing the South African batsman to lose balance and tumble on the pitch.

Bowlers help South Africa open account in T20 World Cup 2024

Sri Lanka opted to bat first upon winning the toss but faltered, managing a mere 77 runs before being dismissed in 19.1 overs. Anrich Nortje (4/7), Keshav Maharaj (2/22), and Kagiso Rabada (2/21) proved formidable for the Sri Lankan batters on the challenging New York pitch.

Quinton de Kock (20) and Heinrich Klaasen (19*) displayed prudent batting alongside their teammates, guiding South Africa to victory in 16.2 overs. Despite Wanindu Hasaranga, the Sri Lankan captain, securing two wickets, his efforts couldn’t prevent the defeat. Nortje’s exceptional bowling performance earned him the Player of the Match award for his outstanding spell in the initial innings.
