Team India’s star Rishabh Pant marked his much-anticipated return to the national squad with a breathtaking display, playing a crucial role behind India’s victory against Ireland in their first match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. After a warm-up game against Bangladesh earlier this week, Pant entered the fray during the powerplay at No.3, following the dismissal of Virat Kohli, who was caught at deep third for a mere single.
Rishabh Pant steals the show after Rohit Sharma’s injury
In pursuit of a modest target of 97, Pant initially played a supporting role to captain Rohit Sharma. However, the dynamics changed when Rohit retired hurt at the end of the tenth over. Pant then began to dominate, smashing his first six off Josh Little with a powerful pull over mid-wicket, and following it up with a boundary against Ben White in the subsequent over.
The spectacular finish: Reverse scoop for six
With India needing just six runs at the start of the 13th over during their chase of 97, Pant executed a remarkable reverse scoop shot. He effortlessly altered his grip, sending a length ball, which was moving past off-stump for a left-handed batter, soaring over the wicket-keeper for a maximum.
This spectacular shot sealed the victory for India with 46 balls and eight wickets to spare, earning them two crucial points in Group A. India’s next encounter is a highly anticipated match against Pakistan, scheduled for Sunday (June 9) in New York.
