Team India began their Super 8 campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 with a commanding win against Afghanistan on Thursday. The Indian team outclassed the spin-reliant Afghan side, securing a 47-run victory at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
Strong batting performance sets up victory
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, India posted an imposing total of 181/8 in their 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav led the charge with an explosive 53 off 28 balls, while Hardik Pandya added a crucial 32 off 24 deliveries. In reply, Afghanistan were bundled out for 134, with Jasprit Bumrah (3/7) and Arshdeep Singh (3/36) delivering standout performances with the ball.
Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant’s light-hearted moment
During Afghanistan’s innings, Indian captain Rohit Sharma and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant shared a light-hearted moment. The incident occurred when Kuldeep Yadav secured his first wicket by dismissing Gulbadin Naib (17 off 21) with a wrong’un.
Naib, attempting a big shot, only managed to sky the ball. As the ball soared, Pant called for the catch loudly and took a running catch near Rohit. Immediately after, Rohit appeared to humorously gesture for Pant to relax, seemingly indicating that the catch was his all along

Rohit lauds the team after emphatic victory
After the match, Rohit praised the team’s ability to adapt to the conditions and highlighted the collective effort, especially the strength of their bowling attack in defending the target. He emphasized the significance of each player’s contribution, noting the valuable partnership between Suryakumar and Hardik.
Rohit also commended Bumrah’s crucial role and the strategic utilization of his skills, emphasizing Bumrah’s readiness to take on responsibility in any situation.
“We adapted well to the conditions that were offered. We knew the class of our bowling line up will defend this. Everyone coming in and doing their job. That is something we keep talking about. Surya and Hardik’s partnership was a good one in the end. We know what Bumrah can do for us. It is important for us to use him smartly. He is the one who is ready to take the responsibility as well. Whereever he plays, he is always ready to take the responsibility. I got to assess the conditions,” said Rohit at the post-match presentation.
