A pulsating encounter between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2024 witnessed a spectacular display of power-hitting by Towhid Hridoy, propelling Bangladesh to a thrilling two-wicket victory at the Grand Prairie Stadium.
Opting to bowl first, Bangladesh kept the Sri Lankan batting lineup in check. Tight bowling spells from Rishad Hossain (3/20) and Mustafizur Rahman (3/24) restricted Sri Lanka to a modest total of 124/9. Pathum Nissanka‘s knock of 47 runs was the only significant contribution from the Sri Lankan batters.
Towhid Hridoy steals the show with a hat-trick of sixes
Chasing a seemingly manageable target, Bangladesh’s chase started cautiously. However, the turning point arrived with the emergence of Towhid Hridoy. In a display of sheer power-hitting, Hridoy launched a brutal assault on Sri Lankan skipper and leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga in the 11th over. He smashed three consecutive sixes – a flat pull, a towering slog-sweep, and a booming drive over long-off – completely shifting the momentum in Bangladesh’s favor.

Bangladesh clinches victory despite late scare
Hridoy’s heroics put Bangladesh in a commanding position. While he departed shortly after his six-hitting spree, the platform he laid allowed Bangladesh to inch closer to the target. Sri Lanka staged a late fightback, picking up quick wickets, but veteran batsman Mahmudullah held his nerve, guiding Bangladesh to a dramatic two-wicket win.
Hridoy’s performance will be lauded for its sheer audacity and brilliance. This victory gives Bangladesh a vital boost as they embark on their T20 World Cup campaign, while Sri Lanka will need to regroup quickly before their next match.
“We started really well in the first 10 overs but in the middle overs we batted badly. Bowling is our strength. If we had got 150-160 we could have won with our bowling attack. The batters let us down in both games. We still have two games and we will try to do our best. Maheesh and myself are the two main spinners and we have to attack,” said the losing captain Hasaranga in the post-match presentation.
