The Uganda cricket team was ecstatic as they marked their groundbreaking triumph in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 against Papua New Guinea (PNG) with a distinctive dance following the match’s conclusion.

This marks Uganda’s debut in a significant ICC tournament, having previously faced defeat in their opening match against Afghanistan a few days prior. Nonetheless, Thursday proved to be their moment as they secured their first points in the T20 World Cup 2024.

In a nail-biting, low-scoring encounter, Uganda triumphed over Papua New Guinea by 3 wickets, achieving their maiden win in an ICC competition. After sealing the victory, the Ugandan players displayed their dancing prowess, with the support staff enthusiastically joining in.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Uganda has showcased their dance moves; they celebrated similarly upon qualifying for the T20 World Cup 2024.

Uganda claim thrilling win a low-scoring clash

Regarding the match, Uganda opted to bowl first after winning the toss. In the opening over, PNG’s captain Assad Vala was dismissed for a duck by Alpesh Ramjani. PNG struggled at 19/3 during the powerplay as Cosmas Kyewula and Juma Miyagi contributed by taking the wickets of Tony Ura and Sese Bau, respectively. Hiri was the sole player to offer some resistance, top-scoring for PNG with 15 runs.

Left-arm orthodox spinner Frank Nsubuga made history by delivering the most economical spell in the men’s T20 World Cup, taking 2 wickets and conceding only 4 runs in his four overs. PNG were eventually bowled out for 77 in 19.1 overs.

Nevertheless, Uganda’s chase was far from straightforward, as PNG retaliated with the ball, reducing Uganda to 26/5 by the 7th over. Riazat Ali Shah then anchored the innings with a composed knock of 33 from 56 balls, guiding Uganda to a thrilling victory with three wickets remaining.
