As the Indian cricket team prepares for the fourth T20I match of their tour of Zimbabwe, Indian pacer Avesh Khan has shared his thoughts on the newly appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir.
Avesh, who has previously played under Gambhir’s coaching in the Indian Premier League (IPL), provided a valuable opinion on the former Indian cricketer.
Avesh Khan’s insights on new India coach Gautam Gambhir
Reflecting on his experience with Gambhir, Avesh emphasised the coach’s focus on mindset and continuous improvement. “What I’ve learned from him is the importance of always looking to outsmart your opponents and giving your 100 per cent,” Avesh said in an interview with the BCCI.
This mindset, he believes, is crucial for any player aiming to excel on the international stage.
Avesh also highlighted Gambhir’s communication style and strategic approach within the team. “In team meetings and one-on-one sessions, he speaks less but effectively conveys his points. He clearly assigns tasks and roles to each player,” the right-arm pacer explained.
He further noted that Gambhir’s leadership is characterised by his dedication to team success and his expectation that every player gives best on the field.
“He has always been a ‘team coach’. He wants to win and expects everyone to give their 100 per cent.”

Gambhir’s success in the IPL
Avesh Khan’s relationship with Gambhir dates back to their time together at the Lucknow Super Giants during the 2022 IPL season.
Gambhir’s influence was evident as the Super Giants made impressive strides in the IPL. In both the 2022 and 2023 seasons, the team reached the playoffs, showcasing a blend of strategic brilliance and teamwork instilled by Gambhir. Although Avesh left the Super Giants after the 2023 edition of the IPL, the lessons he learned under Gambhir’s guidance continued to shape his career.
Gambhir’s subsequent move to coach Kolkata Knight Riders further highlighted his coaching prowess. Taking over a team that had been striving for consistency, Gambhir’s strategic mind and motivational skills led the Knight Riders to an IPL title this year.
