The speculation around Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has already begun, just a few months after the conclusion of the previous season. One significant possibility is KL Rahul’s potential switch from the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
KL Rahul’s potential move to RCB for IPL 2024
According to a Dainik Jagran report, there might be growing tensions between Rahul and LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka. The rift reportedly began after LSG’s unexpected 10-wicket defeat to the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), where Rahul faced criticism from Goenka over his tactics. A viral video of their on-field disagreement added fuel to the rumoyrs. Although both Rahul and Goenka have denied any serious issues, the incident appears to have impacted their relationship. LSG, which had a successful run in 2022 and 2023, experienced a disappointing season in 2024, finishing 7th. As a result, reports are suggesting that RCB could be interested in appointing Rahul as captain and replacing Faf du Plessis. However, this will ultimately depend on the BCCI’s player retention rules for the upcoming season.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s recent performance
Under Du Plessis, RCB experienced a dramatic turnaround in the IPL 2024. The team, having lost only one of their eight league matches, qualified for the playoffs. Despite their strong performance throughout the season, they were unable to progress past the crucial playoff match, losing by 4 wickets to the Rajasthan Royals (RR).
Meanwhile, Rahul, who started his IPL career with RCB in 2013 and had a notable stint in 2016, could potentially return to the franchise. In 2016, Rahul scored 397 runs at an average of 44.11 with a strike rate of 146.69. If he joins RCB, he is expected to enhance their middle-order and could even be considered for the captaincy role. The final decision on leadership will be influenced by the BCCI’s regulations regarding player retention.

A mixed response from IPL fans
Rahul’s potential shift to RCB for IPL 2025 has evoked a variety of responses from IPL fans. The change has stirred a spectrum of opinions, reflecting both excitement and skepticism. A significant portion of fans is enthusiastic about Rahul’s move. His track record as a reliable batter and leader at LSG is seen as a positive indicator for RCB. Supporters are hopeful that his leadership will inject fresh energy into the team and enhance their performance in the upcoming season. Conversely, there are concerns about Rahul’s ability to replicate his past success with RCB. Some fans point to the challenges Rahul faced with LSG and question whether he can meet the high expectations at his new club.
KL Rahul please come in RCB for next year's IPL. We have some unfinished business.
