Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has hit out at baseless rumours circulating online that link him romantically to tennis star Sania Mirza. These rumours gained traction on social media following Mirza’s divorce from Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik. Doctored images and unfounded claims of an impending marriage between Shami and Mirza flooded social media platforms, despite the complete absence of credible sources or official confirmation.

Mohammed Shami calls for responsible social media use

Clearly frustrated by the situation, Shami addressed the rumours in a candid interview with YouTuber Shubhankar Mishra. He condemned the deliberate fabrication of these stories for mere entertainment, highlighting the potential harm such misinformation can cause to individuals’ lives.

“I urge everyone to be responsible with social media and refrain from spreading such unfounded news,” Shami stated.

The Indian pacer expressed his disapproval of memes and content created solely for amusement, especially when they negatively impact people’s lives. He emphasized the importance of responsible social media behaviour, particularly regarding content shared from unverified sources.

“Ajeeb hi hai aur hai kya usme? zabardasti kiya hai par kya karien? Phone kholo toh apna hi photo dikhta hai. Lekin mai ek hi cheez bolna chahunga – Kisi ko nahi kheechna chahiye aisa. Main manta hu memes aapke mazaak ke liye hai lekin kisi ki life se related hote hai. Toh aapko soch samajh kar memes banana chahiye. Aaj aap verified page nahi ho, aapka address nahi hai, known nahi ho toh aap bol sakte ho. (It is weird and done purposely for some lame fun. But what can be done? If I open my phone then I could see those memes. But I would only like to say I think that memes are made for fun, but if they are related to someone’s life, then you must think about it and then share such things. These people share from unverified pages and get away by saying anything and everything).”

Shami challenges rumour mongers to achieve success

Shami concluded his statement with a strong message for those spreading the rumours. He challenged them to step forward and make something of themselves before criticizing others.

“Lekin mai ek hi cheez bolna chahunga – agar aap mein dum hai toh verified page se bolke dikhao, fir hum batate hain. Dusre ki taang kheechna bohot aasan hai. Success achieve karo, apna level upar karo. Tab main manunga aap acche insaan hai. (But I would like to say one thing – if you have the guts to say all these things from a verified page, then I will reply. Try achieving success, help people and upgrade yourself then I will believe that you are a good person),” the 33-year-old added.

Shami’s statement is certainly a strong step towards quelling the speculation. His direct address not only clarifies his own position but also helps protect both his and Sania’s reputations from further unfounded gossip.
