The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made significant changes to its selection committee following the national team’s poor performance in the recent T20 World Cup 2024. In a decisive move, two prominent selectors have been dismissed from their roles. This decision comes on the heels of Pakistan’s early exit from the tournament, where they failed to advance past the group stage.
Pakistan’s performance in the global event
Pakistan’s journey in the multi-team event was cut short as they struggled to find their form in the group stage. Despite high expectations and a strong squad, the team couldn’t deliver the desired results, leading to their premature elimination from the tournament. This underwhelming performance has sparked criticism and led to calls for major changes within the team’s management and selection committee.
Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq sacked from the selection committee
In response to the team’s poor show in the global event, the PCB has decided to terminate the services of Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq. Razzaq, who served as a member of both the men’s and women’s selection committees, and Riaz, a key figure in the men’s seven-member selection committee, have both been relieved of their duties. This move is part of a broader effort to revamp the selection process and improve the team’s performance in future competitions.

The PCB released a statement on Wednesday confirming the termination of both selectors’ roles within the national selection committee setup.
“The Pakistan Cricket Board has notified Abdul Razzaq and Wahab Riaz that their services will no longer be required in the national selection committee setup,” the PCB statement read, which underscores the board’s commitment to making necessary changes in response to the team’s recent failures.
Instability continues within the PCB
The dismissal of Riaz and Razzaq adds to the ongoing instability within the PCB. Over the past four years, the board has seen six different chief selectors. In addition to Riaz, the other five include Haroon Rashid, Shahid Afridi, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Wasim, and Misbah-ul-Haq. This frequent turnover highlights the challenges the PCB faces in establishing a stable and effective selection committee capable of guiding the national team to success.
