The dynamic duo of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar is celebrated as the most successful opening pair in the history of One Day Internationals (ODIs). Together, they have amassed 6609 runs from 136 innings at an impressive average of 49.32. Their partnership has yielded 21 century stands and 23 half-century stands, making them a formidable force at the top of the order. Their chemistry on the field, with complementary strategies and styles, made them an iconic pair in cricketing history. But who amongst the current India squad have the ability to replicate what Ganguly and Tendulkar did for Indian cricket? Well, former opener Robin Uthappa has the answer.

Robin Uthappa picks the young duo as the next Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar

Uthappa has lauded the young opening duo of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, drawing parallels between them and the legendary pair of Ganguly and Tendulkar. Uthappa highlighted how the current pair’s approach and strategies remind him of the celebrated duo from the past.

“I do see them, when I look at them they remind me of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar going out together, where their games kind of complemented each other. Their strategies complemented each other, that’s what I see when I see these two go out to bat together,” said Uthappa on Sony Sports Network.

The young pair’s impressive record

Notably, Gill and Jaiswal have shown great promise as an opening pair in international cricket. They have opened together in nine innings, scoring 516 runs at an impressive average of 64.50. Their partnership has already produced two century stands and two half-century stands, indicating a bright future for Indian cricket with these young talents at the helm.

Uthappa also expressed strong confidence in Jaiswal’s potential to secure his place in the ODI squad. Despite having played 22 matches in other formats, Jaiswal is yet to make his ODI debut. Uthappa believes that once Jaiswal gets his chance in ODIs, he will quickly cement his spot due to his adaptability and skill set.

“I honestly feel when he (Jaiswal) gets that opportunity in ODI cricket, he will seal that spot so quickly because after Test cricket and T20I cricket, ODI cricket is going to be so much easier for him. Because he will feel like I have all the time in the world to be able to score runs,” Uthappa added.

As Indian cricket looks forward to the future, the emergence of Gill and Jaiswal as a promising opening pair brings hope and excitement, with the potential to recreate the magic once woven by Ganguly and Tendulkar.
