In the ongoing T20I series against Zimbabwe, young Indian sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal created history in the fifth and final match. Opening the innings for India, Jaiswal made an unforgettable impact right from the first over.

Explosive beginning

Facing Zimbabwe skipper Sikandar Raza, Jaiswal launched the innings with a powerful six off a full toss, sending the ball over deep square leg. The excitement didn’t stop there. Capitalizing on a free hit, granted due to Raza’s overstep on the first ball, Jaiswal hit another six, amassing 13 runs off just one legal delivery.

Historic feat

This remarkable start made Jaiswal the first player to score 12 runs off the first legal delivery in a men’s T20I game. Despite this stellar beginning, Jaiswal’s innings was cut short when Raza took revenge by bowling him out on the fourth ball of the first over. The Zimbabwean captain also gave Jaiswal a fiery send-off after the dismissal.

Setting new records

Jaiswal’s achievement of scoring the most runs on the first legal delivery and hitting two sixes on the first two balls of a men’s T20I innings is unprecedented among players from full member nations. Only Ivan Selemani of Tanzania has matched this feat, achieved in a 2022 match against Rwanda.

Interestingly, the left-handed batter had previously achieved a similar feat in the IPL, hitting two sixes off the first two balls against Nitish Rana during a match between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023. He joined Virat Kohli as one of the only two players to do so in IPL history. Further, India’s total of 13 runs on the first legal delivery of the match also set a new record for the most runs scored after one legal delivery, surpassing Pakistan’s previous record of 10 runs against Sri Lanka in 2022.

Sanju Samson helps India reach a competitive total

Despite Jaiswal’s early dismissal, India managed to post a respectable total on the scoreboard. After a shaky start, losing three wickets for just 40 runs, Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag stabilized the innings. Their crucial partnership of 65 runs for the fourth wicket brought India back into the game. Parag scored 22 runs, while Samson remained steadfast, contributing 58 runs off 45 balls, including 4 sixes and a four. India eventually finished at 167/6 in their allotted 20 overs.
