In a remarkable feat, Pakistan’s rising star Saud Shakeel has equaled a 65-year-old record by becoming the joint-fastest Pakistani batter to reach 1000 runs in Test cricket. Playing his 20th innings, Shakeel achieved this milestone during the first Test against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.
Saud Shakeel matches Saeed Ahmed’s feat
Shakeel matched the record set by former cricketer Saeed Ahmed, who had reached the 1000-run mark in 20 innings back in 1959. This achievement places Shakeel alongside some of Pakistan’s greatest batters, including Javed Miandad and Sadiq Mohammad, who took 23 and 22 innings respectively to complete their first thousand Test runs.
Shakeel’s impressive start to Test career
The 28-year-old left-handed batter made his Test debut for Pakistan against England in December 2022 and has since cemented his place in the team with consistent performances. In just 20 innings, he has amassed over 1000 runs at an outstanding average of 60 plus, with two centuries and seven half-centuries to his name.

Shakeel’s record-equaling feat came at a crucial moment for Pakistan in the ongoing Test against Bangladesh. After losing three early wickets, including the prized scalp of Babar Azam, Shakeel joined forces with fellow Karachi-born batter Saim Ayub to lead the recovery. At stumps on Day 1, Shakeel remained unbeaten on 57 off 92 balls, having forged a crucial 98-run partnership with Ayub for the fourth wicket. Their resilient efforts helped Pakistan reach 158/4 in 41 overs, a commendable score considering their precarious start.
Shakeel’s recent achievement is a testament to his talent and the promise he holds for Pakistan’s future in Test cricket. As the series progresses, all eyes will be on the young batter to continue his impressive form and help his team secure a strong position in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings.
