New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has officially announced the appointment of former allrounder Jacob Oram as the bowling coach of the men’s national team. This decision comes as the team prepares for a busy schedule of Test matches, with Oram set to take over the role permanently from October 7, 2024. He fills the position previously held by Shane Jurgensen, who stepped down in November 2023.
A familiar face in coaching
Oram, who has a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach, has been involved with the New Zealand cricket setup for several years. He previously served as the bowling coach for the national women’s team from 2018 until the Women’s ODI World Cup in March 2022. His recent stint as a temporary bowling coach during the Test tour to Bangladesh and the Men’s T20 World Cup has provided him with valuable insights into the current team’s dynamics.
The 46-year-old has represented New Zealand in 33 Tests, 160 ODIs, and 36 T20Is, amassing a total of 229 international caps throughout his playing career. In an official statement, Oram expressed his excitement about returning to the Black Caps, stating, “I’m really excited to have the opportunity to be involved with the Black Caps again. To be back involved with a team that means so much to me and has been a big part of my life is a real honour.”

Focus on developing young talent
Oram’s primary objective in his new role will be to nurture the next generation of bowlers within the New Zealand setup. He aims to share his knowledge and experience with emerging talents, preparing them for the challenges of international cricket. “There’s a fresh new wave of talent coming through in the Black Caps bowling ranks, and I hope that I can share my knowledge and experience to help best prepare them,” he added.
With a series of Test matches on the horizon, Oram’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the New Zealand team. The Black Caps have faced challenges in recent international outings, including a disappointing performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year. The team will be looking to bounce back and solidify their standing in the international arena.
