Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam‘s recent woes in Test cricket continued as he was dismissed for a two-ball duck on Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, August 21. Babar’s dismissal came in the 9th over, where he was caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Litton Das on Shoriful Islam‘s bowling This early setback left Pakistan reeling at 16/3.
Early collapse for Pakistan against Bangladesh
The start of the Test match was delayed by over four hours due to a wet outfield, but the drama unfolded quickly once play began. Before Babar’s dismissal, Pakistan had already lost skipper Shan Masood and opener Abdullah Shafique after the host were invited to bat first by the Bangladesh team. Masood was dismissed for 6, also by Shoriful, while Shafique was sent back for just 2 runs by Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud.
Masood was also dismissed in controversial fashion. He was declared out after what appeared to be a contentious decision by the umpire, leading to a heated exchange between Masood and the officials. The visibly frustrated Masood was forced to walk back to the pavilion for just 6 runs off 11 balls, leaving his team in further disarray. The hosts found themselves in deep trouble as Babar, who was expected to stabilize the innings, fell cheaply, leaving Pakistan in a precarious position.

Babar Azam departs for a duck
Babar, who has been struggling in Test cricket over the last 18 months, came to the crease under pressure after the early wickets. He started his innings with a defensive shot, but on the second ball of his stay, he attempted to guide a back-of-a-length delivery from Shoriful. Unfortunately for Babar, a slight touch was enough for the ball to carry to wicketkeeper Das, who completed a spectacular one-handed catch. This was Babar’s first duck at home and his first in Test cricket in three years, adding to his recent run of poor form.
Here’s how fans reacted:
So much hype for Babar, but when it matters, he crumbles! Yet again, proving that stats alone don't make you a match-winner. Time to step up or step aside! 🏏 #Overrated @babarazam258
