In Match 10 of The Hundred 2024, the London Spirit Women faced a disappointing defeat at the hands of the Welsh Fire Women. The match, held at Lord’s in London, marked the Spirit Women’s first loss of the season.

London Spirit Women’s innings

The Spirit won the toss and opted to bat first. Contributions from Meg Lanning (31), Danielle Gibson (41) and Deepti Sharma (39*) helped them post a competitive total of 150. Despite a strong batting effort, the Spirit struggled with the Fire’s disciplined bowling attack, which claimed five crucial wickets. Freya Davies was exceptional, finishing with figures of 2/19 from her 20 balls, including 10 dot balls.

Georgia Redmayne falls to Beth Langston’s brilliant ball

A standout moment in the Fire’s bowling came from Beth Langston, who delivered a perfectly executed delivery to dismiss Georgia Redmayne. On the 14th ball of her spell, Langston bowled a delivery that started on middle stump before swinging back in sharply.

The ball hit a good length and moved inward, catching Redmayne off guard as she attempted to play a leg-side shot. The inward movement beat the inside edge, and the ball struck the top of the leg stump, knocking off the bail. This crucial wicket reduced the Spirit  to 6/1 early in their innings, putting them under significant pressure.

Welsh Fire Women’s response

In reply, Hayley Matthews played a match-winning innings for the Fire. Matthews’ aggressive knock of 78* off 46 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes, guided her team to victory. The Fire chased down the target in 95 balls with six wickets in hand.  Although Danielle Gibson claimed two wickets for the Spirit, it wasn’t enough to halt the Fire’s run chase.

The inability to contain the runs cost the Spirit dearly, resulting in their first loss of the season. They remain in second place with four points and a net run rate of +0.305. On the other hand, the Fire have climbed to third position, also with four points but with a net run rate of -0.017.
