Kathryn Bryce has etched her name in the history books of The Hundred 2024 by becoming the third player ever to take a hat-trick in the women’s competition. Bryce, who also captains the Scotland women’s team, achieved this remarkable feat while playing for the Manchester Originals in their clash against the Northern Superchargers.

Kathryn Bryce makes history with hat-trick in The Hundred Women’s

Her hat-trick, spread across two sets, saw her dismissing Annabel Sutherland, Alice Davidson-Richards and Kate Cross. On ball 80, Bryce bowled with reduced pace, leading to Sutherland’s mistimed shot, which was caught comfortably by Eve Jones at the boundary.

On ball 96, Davidson-Richards attempted a big hit but only managed to send the ball skyward, allowing Beth Mooney to take an easy catch. Bryce completed her hat-trick on the very next ball when Cross missed a wide delivery, and Mooney swiftly removed the bails to seal the milestone. With this achievement, Bryce joins Shabnim Ismail and Alana King as the only players to have taken a hat-trick in The Hundred women’s competition.

Bryce’s fifer and Beth Mooney’s heroics propel Manchester Originals

Bryce didn’t just stop at the hat-trick; she went on to take a five-wicket haul, with her other wickets bookending the hat-trick. Her exceptional bowling performance was the highlight of the second innings, but it was Beth Mooney who laid the foundation for the Originals with a stunning unbeaten 99. Mooney’s knock, which is now the highest score of the ongoing edition and the second-highest overall in the tournament, helped the Originals post a formidable total of 151/3. She hit 14 boundaries and three sixes in her 54-ball innings, ensuring the Originals set a challenging target for the Superchargers.

Northern Superchargers’ chase falls short despite Phoebe Litchfield’s efforts

Chasing 152 was always going to be a tough ask for the Superchargers Women. Phoebe Litchfield, batting at number three, fought valiantly and scored 45 runs before being bowled in the 65th set. Sutherland (26) and Georgia Wareham (25) also contributed, but their efforts weren’t enough to chase down the target. In the end, the Superchargers Women fell short by 17 runs, as Bryce’s fifer and Mooney’s unbeaten 99 guided the Originals to a well-deserved victory.
