In a nail-biting encounter at Lord’s, Oval Invincibles all-rounder Marizanne Kapp produced a remarkable performance in Match 15 of The Hundred Women’s 2024 competition on Sunday (August 4). The highlight of the match was Kapp’s spectacular delivery that dismissed London Spirit opener Meg Lanning.

Marizanne Kapp’s magic ball dismisses Meg Lanning

The dismissal unfolded on the fourth ball of the Spirit’s innings, setting a dramatic tone early in the match. Kapp delivered a full-length ball that exemplified her skill and intent. As the ball was released, it appeared to be a typical delivery angling across the batter. However, Kapp’s skill caused the ball to jag back sharply off the seam.

Lanning seemed initially confident in her defensive stroke. Yet, as the ball deviated unexpectedly, it penetrated her otherwise reliable defense. The deviation was so pronounced and sudden that it went through her bat-pad gap with surgical precision. The stumps behind her lit up as the bails were dislodged, signaling her departure for just a single run. Lanning’s expression mirrored the collective gasp from the spectators – surprise and disbelief etched across her face. The scoreboard reflected the early blow, showing Spirit precariously placed at 2/1 in their very first over.

Dominance with the ball

Kapp continued her devastating spell, taking four wickets in her 20 deliveries while conceding only 11 runs. Following Lanning’s wicket, Kapp struck twice in quick succession, dismissing Cordelia Griffith (19 off 12 balls) and Georgia Redmayne (9 off 11 balls). She then capped off her spell with the crucial wicket of the Spirit captain Heather Knight, completing an outstanding bowling performance. Apart from Kapp’s four wickets, Ryana Macdonald Gay and Sophia Smale contributed by picking two-wickets each. The disciplined bowling restricted Spirit to a modest total of 113/9

Oval Invincibles’ reply and the tense finish against London Spirit

In response, the Invincibles’ innings saw wickets fall at regular intervals, but crucial contributions from Alice Capsey (27) and Marizanne Kapp (47) stabilized the chase. Despite Kapp’s solid batting, the Spirit Women fought back fiercely, with Danielle Gibson bowling a brilliant final set. The Invincibles required four runs from the last set, but with two needed from the final ball, Macdonald Gay was run out after completing one run, resulting in a dramatic tie. For the Spirit, Deepti Sharma shone with the ball, picking up three wickets while conceding only 18 runs in her 20 deliveries. Her economical and effective bowling played a significant role in keeping the game competitive until the very end.
