In a remarkable display of resilience and skill, Mominul Haque, Bangladesh‘s top-order batter, anchored his team during a challenging first session on Day 4 of the second Test against India at Green Park, Kanpur. As wickets tumbled around him, Haque stood firm, ultimately scoring a century that not only marked a personal milestone but also etched his name in the annals of cricket history. His achievement as the first Bangladesh batter at number three to score a Test century against India is a testament to his determination and talent.

A century to remember for Mominul Haque

Mominul’s century was significant for more than just personal accolades; it was a historic moment for Bangladesh cricket. He became the first visiting batter since 2004 to score a Test century at Green Park, Kanpur, breaking a long-standing record held by South Africa’s Andrew Hall, who scored 163 runs in a match that ended in a draw. This achievement underscores Mominul’s ability to perform under pressure and highlights his importance to the Bangladesh team.

In addition to his century, Mominul also broke a unique record previously held by former Australian captain Ricky Ponting. Before this match, Mominul had the lowest batting average for any visiting batter on Indian soil with just 96 runs from eight innings. Ponting had scored 172 runs from 14 innings before finally reaching his first century in India. Mominul’s performance not only signifies personal growth but also reflects the evolving landscape of Bangladeshi cricket.

Mominul joins an elite club of Bangladeshi batters

Mominul is now the second Bangladeshi player to score a Test century on Indian soil, following his teammate Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored 127 in Hyderabad in 2017. He is also the sixth Bangladeshi batter to achieve this feat against India, joining the ranks of Mohammad Ashraful (158 not out), Tamim Iqbal (151), Aminul Islam (145), and Zakir Hasan (100). Notably, Mushfiqur remains the only Bangladeshi player with two Test centuries against India.

Mominul stands in the way of India

Entering Day 4 with a score of 40 after two rain-affected days, Mominul quickly took charge as wickets fell around him. Following Rahim’s dismissal by Jasprit Bumrah, he reached his half-century off 110 balls. Despite the pressure from India’s disciplined bowling attack, Mominul managed to accelerate his scoring by finding boundaries frequently. In an impressive display of skill, he swept Ravichandran Ashwin for four runs to reach his century off 172 balls. By the end of the session, Bangladesh had reached 205 for 6 after 66 overs with Mominul batting unbeaten on 102 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz on 6 runs, but with a start of the second session the visitors did face a collapse where except Mominul, all batters failed to hold their end.
