Shubman Gill showcased his class with a remarkable unbeaten century on Day 3 of the 1st Test between India and Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The young opener silenced his critics with a flawless knock of 119 from 176 balls, which included 10 boundaries and 4 sixes. After being dismissed for a duck in the first innings, Gill displayed tremendous composure and focus as his fifth Test hundred underlined his ability to bounce back and perform under pressure.

Tamim Iqbal emphasized the exceptional calmness that Gill displayed throughout his innings, even after reaching his century. Tamim was impressed by how Gill maintained his composure with every ball he faced, showing remarkable restraint and maturity. Despite the pressures of the game, Gill’s temperament stood out, allowing him to build his innings patiently while still delivering some excellent, authoritative shots. Tamim admired the way Gill approached his innings with a level-headedness that often characterizes experienced cricketers, making his century even more special.

Tamim also highlighted that while much attention was being given to Rishabh Pant‘s aggressive hitting, it was Gill’s technical prowess and calm approach that truly caught his eye. The former Bangladesh captain specifically recalled a pull shot Gill played, calling it “unbelievable,” and praised his smooth, well-timed drives. For Tamim, the defining feature of Gill’s knock was his consistent calmness, which he found remarkable, suggesting that even though he doesn’t know Gill personally, the young Indian batter exuded a sense of serenity throughout his innings, something that clearly stood out to him.

“I think this is a calmness towards him. Even after reaching the hundred. Whatever balls he faced, there was always a calmness towards him. And I think he played some excellent shots. Played up a lovely, lovely innings. Yes, they’re talking about Rishabh Pant, the sixes and the fours. But how well Gill has batted? I cannot forget the full shot that he played yesterday. It is unbelievable. And the drives and the calmness. The best part was the whole calmness. It seems to me I don’t know him personally, but he seems to be a very calm man,” Tamim told Jio Cinema.

Gill’s partnership with Rishabh Pant grabs attention

Gill’s standout century was complemented by an attacking innings from Pant, with the duo sharing a brilliant 167-run partnership from 217 balls. While Pant’s aggressive stroke play grabbed the spotlight, Gill’s calm approach provided the stability India needed. Together, they took India to a dominant position, helping the hosts recover from early setbacks in their second innings and setting the stage for a declaration.

India in strong position after Day 3

Following Gill and Pant’s centuries, India declared at 287/4, setting a massive target of 515 runs for Bangladesh. Despite a positive start, Bangladesh ended the day at 158/4, still needing 357 runs to avoid defeat. With just two days remaining, India are in a commanding position, thanks to Gill’s composure, Pant’s aggression, and a strong bowling display late in the day.
