Jos Buttler‘s tenure as England’s white-ball captain has faced scrutiny following a series of disappointing performances. Speaking to Sky Sports, Trescothick emphasized Buttler’s exceptional leadership qualities and his ability to keep the team unified despite recent challenges. Trescothick acknowledged the disruptions caused by the recent World Cup campaigns but firmly believes that Buttler is the right person to lead the team forward.
“I think he is the right person to lead the team. The attributes he shows behind the scenes are really important to lead this team. For whatever reason, the tough couple of World Cups they have had, they’ve potentially come out of those not feeling great about our one-day cricket, but it’s still in a really good place and Jos is going to lead that forward for a period of time at the moment, and I don’t see that changing,” Trescothick said.
Buttler’s injury and future prospects
However, Buttler’s availability for the upcoming T20I series against Australia remains uncertain due to a calf injury. He has not played competitive cricket since the T20 World Cup semi-final against India. Trescothick has been appointed as interim head coach for the series against Australia, which includes three T20Is and five ODIs, following Matthew Mott‘s departure.
Looking ahead, Buttler’s future as captain will continue to be a topic of discussion, especially with the arrival of Brendon McCullum, who will take over as England’s new white-ball coach.
