In a freakish moment during the 3rd ODI between Afghanistan and South Africa at Sharjah Cricket Ground in Mumbai, Afghanistan batter Rahmat Shah found himself dismissed in an unusual run-out. His untimely exit came after a deflection off the bowler’s hand, leaving the Afghan side in a difficult position early in their innings.
How the run-out unfolded
The incident occurred in the 9th over of Afghanistan’s innings when South African pacer Lungi Ngidi bowled a full delivery to opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Gurbaz drove the ball back down the pitch, and Ngidi, in his follow-through, reached out his hand instinctively. The ball clipped Ngidi’s fingertips and veered off course towards the non-striker’s end, where Rahmat was backing up.
As Rahmat turned to return to his crease, the ball struck him and then crashed into the stumps. Caught off guard, Rahmat was left short of the crease, and the bails came off before he could react. He departed for 1 run off 6 balls, leaving Afghanistan struggling at 38/2.
Impact on the match
Rahmat’s dismissal proved to be a critical moment for Afghanistan. With the team already under pressure, losing a key middle-order player in such a bizarre fashion disrupted their momentum.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz takes Afghanistan to a respectable total
Despite Rahmat’s unfortunate exit, Gurbaz played a brilliant innings, scoring 89 off 94 deliveries. However, with limited support from the rest of the team, Afghanistan could only muster 169 runs before being bowled out in 34 overs. Andile Phehlukwayo was impressive with the ball, claiming 2 wickets for 17 runs, keeping Afghanistan’s middle-order in check.
Aiden Markram drives South Africa home
In response, South Africa chased down the target comfortably. Aiden Markram‘s composed 69 not out ensured the Proteas cruised to victory with seven wickets in hand, reaching 170/3 in 33 overs. South Africa’s well-rounded bowling effort and calm chase saw them seal the win and avoid the Afghan side to clean sweep the series.
