Yuzvendra Chahal have registered his maiden five-wicket haul in this season’s County Championship. Chahal led Northamptonshire ‘s bowling attack against Derbyshire at the County Ground, Northampton. It marked his third five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, further cementing his growing reputation with the red ball in England conditions. Chahal’s remarkable figures of 5 for 45 showcased his ability to be a game-changer.

Support from Rob Keogh and Northamptonshire’s first-innings lead

Alongside off-spinner Rob Keogh, Chahal spun a web around Derbyshire’s batters, guiding Northamptonshire to a crucial 54-run first-innings lead. At one stage on Day 2 of the match, Derbyshire looked comfortable at 150/4, but Chahal’s brilliance, combined with Keogh’s pressure from the other end, triggered a dramatic collapse. Derbyshire’s last six wickets fell for just 15 runs, thanks to Chahal’s mastery. His impact in the County Championship Division 2 game was pivotal.

Derbyshire’s collapse and Yuzvendra Chahal’s five-wicket haul

After electing to bat first, Northamptonshire could only muster 219 runs, setting the stage for a strong bowling performance. Chahal rose to the occasion, decimating Derbyshire’s middle and lower order with his devastating spell. His bowling figures, 16.3-2-45-5, included key dismissals of Aneurin Donald, Zak Chappell, Alex Thomson and Wayne Madsen. His ability to extract turn from the pitch and dismiss key players, including Wayne Madsen on 47, was instrumental. Chahal’s control and guile helped Northamptonshire bowl Derbyshire out for just 165, giving his team the upper hand.

Previous heroics in the One-Day Cup and overall impact

Chahal’s exceptional form extends beyond red-ball cricket. In his only One-Day Cup match for Northamptonshire, he delivered another five-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 5/14 against Kent, his former team.

Chahal’s contributions have made him a valuable asset to Northamptonshire in the ongoing English summer. Despite a slow start in his first two County Championship matches, where he managed only one wicket, the leg-spinner has now hit his stride. His outstanding performance against Derbyshire reinforces his growing importance to Northamptonshire’s campaign this season.

Last representation for India

Chahal had a brief stint with Kent in the County Championship Division One last year, where he took nine wickets in two matches. Chahal last represented India in a warm-up match against Bangladesh during the T20 World Cup 2024 in New York. Although selected for the tournament, Chahal did not feature in any of India’s official matches. However, his current county performances may serve as a reminder of his capabilities across formats.
