England‘s emphatic victory over Pakistan in the first Test of their three-match series has not only further solidified their position in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 standings but also showcased their growing dominance in Test cricket. The comprehensive win by an innings and 47 runs reflects England’s formidable form as they continue their push for a spot in the WTC final.

England’s victory strengthens their World Test Championship campaign

In a masterclass of batting and bowling, England’s top-order batter Joe Root led the charge with a sensational double century, while Harry Brook stole the spotlight with a triple century, marking a rare feat in Test cricket. England’s bowlers were equally outstanding, with left-arm spinner Jack Leach taking seven wickets across both innings, dismantling Pakistan’s batting lineup.

This dominant performance has pushed England into 4th place in the WTC standings, with 93 points. Having played 17 matches in the tournament, England have secured 9 victories, suffered 7 losses, and drawn 1 match. With five matches remaining in their campaign, England faces a must-win situation to bolster their chances of securing a place in the WTC final.

Pakistan’s struggles continue

For Pakistan, the loss was a new low in their WTC journey. This defeat leaves them languishing at the bottom of the WTC standings with only 16 points. Out of their 8 matches, Pakistan have won just two while losing six, making their prospects of qualifying for the WTC final virtually impossible. The team’s inconsistent form in the longest format of the game has been a growing concern, and this heavy defeat further exposes the gaps in their performance.

Race to the WTC Final: India, Australia and Sri Lanka in contention

While England remains in the hunt, the Indian cricket team continues to dominate the WTC standings, sitting comfortably at the top with 98 points. India have played 11 matches, winning eight and losing just two, with one draw. Their upcoming fixtures, which include a highly anticipated three-match Test series against New Zealand and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 against Australia, will be crucial. India will need to win at least three out of their next eight matches to secure a spot in the WTC final.

Australia, currently in second place with 90 points from 12 matches, also remains a strong contender. With eight wins under their belt and just three losses along with one draw, they will be aiming to overtake India during the BGT series, which is expected to be a pivotal contest in the WTC race.

Sri Lanka, in third place with 60 points, also remains in contention. They have won five of their nine matches and will need to continue their winning form to challenge the top teams in the standings. Their ability to stay competitive in the remaining fixtures will determine if they can stay in the hunt for a spot in the final.
