In Match 13 of Group B at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 held in Sharjah on Thursday (October 10), West Indies convincingly defeated Bangladesh Women by 8 wickets. After restricting Bangladesh to a modest 103/8, West Indies chased the target in just 12.5 overs, losing only two wickets along the way. Karishma Ramharack’s brilliant spell, claiming 4 wickets for 17 runs, and captain Hayley Matthews’ fiery knock of 34 off 22 balls, ensured West Indies’ comfortable win with 43 balls to spare.

Bangladesh struggles to build momentum

Bangladesh Women had a tough time building any lasting partnerships, as they faced a disciplined bowling attack from West Indies. Dilara Akter showed some intent at the top of the order, scoring 19 off 18 balls, but it wasn’t enough to set a solid foundation. Skipper Nigar Sultana, who contributed a patient 39 off 44 balls, was the only batter to show some resistance, but she received little support from the middle order. A flurry of wickets in the middle overs, including a double strike by Afy Fletcher and Ramharack’s devastating 4-wicket haul, left Bangladesh reeling. By the end of 20 overs, they could only manage a total of 103/8, a score that was always going to be tough to defend.

West Indies’ aggressive chase led by Hayley Matthews

In response, West Indies’s openers set the tone early, with Matthews smashing 34 off just 22 balls. Stafanie Taylor looked in fine form before being forced to retire hurt on 27. The steady partnership up front made the chase a formality, and despite losing Matthews and Shemaine Campbelle for 21, Deandra Dottin’s explosive cameo of 19 off 7 balls finished the game in style. West Indies reached 104/2 in just 12.5 overs, comfortably surpassing the target and securing a dominant win.

Karishma Ramharack shines with the ball

The standout performer for West Indies in the bowling department was Ramharack. Her spell of 4 for 17 in 4 overs crippled the Bangladesh batting lineup. Ramharack struck crucial blows in the middle overs, dismissing key players such as Akter and Sobhana Mostary. Supported by captain Matthews, who picked up a wicket, and Afy Fletcher, who claimed two wickets, Ramharack ensured Bangladesh never found momentum. Her efforts were key to restricting the opposition to a below-par total, earning her the Player of the Match award.
