Team India found themselves on the back foot again on Day 2 of the second Test against New Zealand at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. In response to New Zealand’s 259, the hosts were bundled out for just 156. The Kiwi spinners delivered a stunning performance, leaving both the Indian players and fans in shock.

Apart from their remarkable bowling, New Zealand’s fielders also displayed exceptional skills, with Daryl Mitchell making headlines for a brilliant catch at slips. The incident occurred on the fourth ball of the 27th over when Glenn Phillips came round the wicket, delivering a 93 kph ball on a length around off. Yashasvi Jaiswal attempted to defend but failed to cover the turn, resulting in an edge. Mitchell, positioned at slip, reacted swiftly and took a stunning low catch, sending Jaiswal back to the pavilion.

Mitchell Santner triggers India’s collapse

It was a rare scenario where India, usually known for their dominance at home, were outplayed by a visiting team. The Indian batting order was left in tatters, primarily due to the brilliance of Mitchell Santner. The left-arm spinner recorded his career-best figures in Test cricket, taking 7 wickets for 53 runs in 19.3 overs, including a maiden over.

India, who were bowled out for 156, now trail New Zealand by 103 runs. Ravindra Jadeja was the top scorer for the hosts with 38 runs, but his effort was not enough to withstand Santner’s spin onslaught. New Zealand stands on the brink of a significant achievement, having outplayed India on their own turf.

New Zealand’s commanding position at the end of Day 2 puts them in a strong position to push for a series-levelling win. With the spinners playing a crucial role, the visitors will look to continue their momentum. India, on the other hand, needs a spirited comeback to stay in contention.
