India are taking on hosts Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The absence of Indian captain Rohit Sharma has raised questions, but the reason for his unavailability has been confirmed as a family commitment.

Rohit and his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, recently welcomed their second child, a baby boy, on November 15, just days before the series opener. As a result, Rohit chose to remain in India to support his family during this special time. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier confirmed that Rohit would not travel with the team to Perth.

In Rohits absence, Jasprit Bumrah, the team’s vice-captain and pace spearhead, has stepped up to lead the side. Speaking about his leadership role, Bumrah said, “It is an honour. I have my own style. Virat was different, Rohit was different, and I have my own way. It is a privilege. I don’t take it as a position. I love taking responsibility.”

India won the toss and opted to bat first on what is expected to be a pace-friendly track. Bumrah expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, highlighting the importance of adapting to Perth’s unique conditions.

“We know what to expect over here. The wicket gets quicker after the first session, so we’re confident about our preparation,” said Bumrah at the toss.

Two players made their debut for India in this match, signalling a fresh approach for the visitors in challenging conditions.

On the other hand, Australian captain Pat Cummins welcomed the conditions, noting, “The wicket has been nice and bouncy, so if it’s there as a fast bowler, we’d like a bit of pace and bounce.”

Will Rohit Sharma’s return to lead Team India?

Rohit is expected to rejoin the India squad on November 24, the third day of the ongoing Test. After a brief training stint, he is likely to participate in a pink-ball warm-up game against the Australian Prime Minister’s XI starting on November 30 in preparation for the second Test in Adelaide, scheduled for December 6.

Rohit’s absence has undoubtedly added to India’s challenges in Perth, a venue known for its fast and bouncy wickets that often trouble visiting sides. The team will rely on senior players like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Bumrah to lead by example as they seek to take an early lead in the series.

India’s decision to bat first reflects their intent to counter Australia’s fearsome pace attack, spearheaded by Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Cummins.
