As the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy between Australia and India approaches, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has called for immediate action regarding two key players – Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami. Ganguly emphasized the importance of Rohit’s leadership and Mohammed’s recent form, urging both to join the team in Australia promptly.

Rohit Sharma’s leadership crucial for India

Indian skipper Rohit has stayed back in Mumbai following the birth of his second child. While the rest of the squad has already reached Australia, Rohit’s participation in the series opener in Perth on November 22 is uncertain. Ganguly, however, insisted that Rohit’s presence is vital for India in what promises to be a challenging five-match Test series.

Speaking to RevSportz, Ganguly said, “I hope Rohit Sharma goes very soon because the team needs leadership. The match is a week away, and India needs his leadership to start with. If I were in his position, I would prioritize playing the Perth Test.”

Highlighting Rohit’s captaincy skills, Ganguly referred to his crucial role in navigating the team through the high-pressure series. “This is a big series, and Rohit is a fantastic captain. India’s chances in the series would greatly benefit from having him lead from the start,” he added.

Mohammed Shami makes a strong case for his inclusion in the Test squad

Ganguly also voiced his support for Shami’s inclusion in the Indian squad after the veteran pacer made an impressive comeback in domestic cricket. Shami recently starred for Bengal in their thrilling 11-run Ranji Trophy victory against Madhya Pradesh, claiming seven wickets, including 4/54 in the first innings. His performance marked a successful return after a year-long absence due to injuries.

Shami, who was initially left out of the Test squad due to fitness concerns, displayed readiness with over 40 overs in the match, showcasing his fitness and effectiveness. “He must go. He doesn’t need to play the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Shami should be on the next flight to Australia. Even if he doesn’t play in Perth, he will benefit from training in Australian conditions and preparing for later matches,” Ganguly stated.

The first Test between Australia and India begins on November 22 at Perth’s Optus Stadium. The series will include a pink-ball Test in Adelaide, followed by matches in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
