Tristan Stubbs, the South African right-handed batting sensation, has quickly become one of the most talked-about players in modern cricket. Since his international debut, the 24-year-old has showcased exceptional potential, thrilling fans worldwide with his explosive batting and game-winning abilities. His prowess has not only made waves in international matches but also garnered significant attention in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has begun carving out a reputation as a power hitter and reliable performer.
IPL debut for Tristan Stubbs with Mumbai Indians
Stubbs made his IPL debut in 2022 when he was picked by Mumbai Indians (MI) as a replacement for the injured Tymal Mills. Joining the league at a modest salary of INR 20 lakh, Stubbs faced a challenging start, playing only two matches and scoring just 2 runs. Despite limited opportunities, the young batter’s inclusion in the prestigious tournament highlighted his potential and gave him the exposure needed to adapt to the high-stakes competition.
In the 2023 IPL season, MI opted to retain Stubbs, maintaining his salary at INR 20 lakh. However, the season proved less eventful for Stubbs, who once again struggled to make a significant impact, scoring 25 runs in two matches. Although his performance did not flourish, Mumbai’s decision to retain him indicated their belief in his talent and future potential. However, this lacklustre season led Mumbai to reconsider Stubbs’ place in the squad ahead of the 2024 IPL auction.

Delhi Capitals ropes in Stubbs
Ahead of the 2024 IPL auction, Stubbs was not retained by Mumbai Indians, opening the door for a new franchise to step in. Delhi Capitals (DC), seeing promise in his potential, bid for him at his base price of INR 50 lakh. This strategic acquisition proved highly beneficial for Delhi, as Stubbs delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 378 runs across the season. He emerged as Delhi’s second-highest run-scorer, hitting three half-centuries and finishing only behind Rishabh Pant. His success at the crease was instrumental in Delhi’s strong season, and his performances made him a fan favorite.
Stubbs’ rewarded with a major retention package
As IPL 2025 auction approaches, DC demonstrated their commitment to Stubbs by retaining him with a substantial pay increase, boosting his salary to INR 10 crore. This whopping figure reflects the confidence the Delhi-based franchise have in Stubbs’ ability.
By investing significantly in Stubbs, DC clearly signalled their belief in the Proteas star, positioning him as a vital component of their squad alongside other key players.
