Shreyas Iyer showcased his resurgence in form by scoring a double century against Odisha in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 at the BKC Ground, Mumbai. This remarkable innings follows his recent century against Maharashtra, marking his second consecutive century in the tournament and his third First-Class double hundred. This performance underscores Iyer’s journey back to peak form after injuries and a three-year wait since his last first-class hundred.

A stellar comeback for Shreyas Iyer

Iyer’s double century against Odisha holds significant value, as it comes nearly three years after his last first-class century, which he scored on his Test debut against New Zealand in Kanpur in November 2021. Since then, Iyer has faced multiple setbacks, including surgeries and form struggles. His century against Maharashtra in the second round marked the beginning of his resurgence, and now, with a commanding double hundred, Iyer is proving his readiness for higher-level cricket. This comeback highlights his resilience and dedication, especially considering his break from first-class cricket due to injuries.

A power-packed innings in the Ranji Trophy 2024

Iyer’s aggressive approach was evident from the start of his innings. His first hundred came in just 101 balls, setting a brisk pace that kept the pressure on the Odisha bowlers. By the end of Day 1, Iyer had raced to 152 with an array of powerful shots, hitting 18 fours and four sixes. His partner, Siddhesh Lad, provided solid support by playing a measured knock, allowing Iyer to focus on quick scoring.

Breaking personal records and setting new milestones

On Day 2, bringing up the double century with a four off Debabrata Pradhan, Iyer showed confidence and ease against the Odisha bowlers. Moments after reaching the 200-mark, Iyer further solidified his innings by cracking another four, raising his score past his previous career-best. This innings marked his second Ranji Trophy double century, the first being back in October 2015. With this innings, Iyer registered his highest First-Class score, surpassing his previous best of 202 against Australia for India A in 2017. By surpassing his earlier records, Iyer not only set new personal milestones but also reminded selectors of his skill and potential as a top-order batter.
