In a press conference that set the tone for India‘s upcoming tour of Australia, head coach Gautam Gambhir arrived with palpable intensity. Following a disheartening 0-3 series loss to New Zealand, Gambhir faced a barrage of tough questions from reporters. The most pointed inquiries revolved around the form of star players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, particularly in light of Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting‘s critical remarks about Kohli’s recent performance. With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy looming, Gambhir’s responses reflected both his passion for the game and unwavering support for his players.

Gautam Gambhir standing tall against criticism

When confronted with Ponting’s assertion that Kohli’s two Test hundreds in five years would be unacceptable for any top-order batsman, Gambhir did not hold back. “What does Ponting have to do with Indian cricket?” he retorted during the press conference, emphasizing that Kohli and Sharma are seasoned athletes who have made significant contributions to Indian cricket. His fiery defense underscored a crucial point: external opinions should not overshadow the hard work and dedication shown by his players.

“I’ve got no concerns whatsoever for Virat and Rohit, I think they are incredibly tough men, they’ve achieved a lot for Indian cricket and they will continue to achieve a lot in future as well. I think for me, the most important thing is that they still work really hard and they’re still passionate. They still want to achieve a lot more. And that is something which is very important,” Gambhir added, insisting they will continue to excel in their careers.

Gambhir’s faith in Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s work culture

Gambhir’s confidence in Kohli and Sharma is rooted in their relentless work ethic. He highlighted the importance of their passion and drive within the team environment.

“The hunger in that dressing room is incredibly important for me and for the entire group of people as well in that dressing room. And I feel there’s a lot of hunger, especially after what has happened in the last series,” he stated, suggesting that despite recent setbacks, the team’s spirit remains unbroken. This hunger is not just about personal achievements; it reflects a collective desire to succeed as a unit, especially after the disappointing series against New Zealand.

India looking ahead to face Australia in Perth

As India prepare for a challenging series against Australia, which kicks off on November 22 in Perth, Gambhir acknowledged the significance of this tour. The team must win at least four out of five Tests to keep their hopes alive for the World Test Championship final. With both teams undergoing transitions, this series promises to be a true test of character and resilience for India under Gambhir’s guidance. The coach’s determination to foster a winning mentality will be crucial as they navigate this high-stakes environment.
