New Zealand‘s fast-bowling spearhead, Lockie Ferguson, has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka due to a calf injury. This news arrives just a day after Ferguson’s outstanding performance in the second T20I, where he clinched a remarkable hat-trick, leading his team to a series-leveling victory. The ODI series, consisting of three matches, is scheduled to commence on November 13 in Dambulla.

Hat-trick hero sidelined by calf injury

Ferguson delivered a stellar bowling spell in the second T20I, taking three wickets for just seven runs in his two overs. This hat-trick proved pivotal in New Zealand’s defense of a low target of 108, helping the Black Caps secure a win and level the 2-match T20I series. Unfortunately, he sustained a calf injury during his second over, forcing him off the field.

Following this setback, Ferguson will return home for further scans to assess the injury’s severity and plan his recovery. New Zealand’s head coach, Gary Stead, expressed his disappointment over losing Ferguson’s expertise and leadership for the series.

“We’re gutted for Lockie. He showed in the space of just two overs what an asset he is with the ball and he’s also brought a lot of leadership to this group, so he’ll be a big miss heading into an important ODI series for us,” said Stead in an official statement.

Lockie Ferguson’s like-for-like replacement announced

In response to Ferguson’s absence, New Zealand Cricket has announced that Adam Milne will step in for the ODI series. Milne, known for his speed and experience, last represented New Zealand in a home T20I series against Australia earlier this year.

“To be ruled out so early in a tour is always tough to take, but we’re hopeful his recovery will be short and he’ll be back out on the field in no time. Adam is a like-for-like replacement who brings genuine pace and plenty of international experience, so we’re looking forward to welcoming him into the group,” added Stead.
