Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has made a sudden return to India due to a family emergency. This unexpected decision comes shortly after India‘s impressive victory in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia. Gambhir’s departure has raised concerns but is deemed necessary for personal reasons.
Gautam Gambhir’s sudden departure
On Tuesday, Gambhir flew back home from Australia, leaving behind the team as they prepare for their next challenge. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that he would rejoin the squad before the second Test, which is set to commence on December 6 in Adelaide.
A BCCI source told The Indian express on Monday, “Gambhir has informed us that he will be travelling back home and will join the team before the start of the second Test. He has cited personal reasons and the BCCI has accepted his request,”. This swift return underscores the importance of family during critical times, even for high-profile sports figures.

Team dynamics in Gambhir’s absence
While Gambhir attends to his family matters, the Indian team’s support staff will take charge of training sessions. Assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, along with bowling coach Morne Morkel and fielding coach T Dilip, will oversee preparations alongside captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit, who recently arrived in Australia after the birth of his second child, was seen practicing diligently in Perth. His presence is crucial as the team gears up for a challenging pink-ball Test against a formidable Australian bowling lineup.
Preparations start for the Adelaide pink ball Test
The Indian squad is scheduled to travel to Canberra for a two-day tour match before heading to Adelaide for the second Test. This practice match is vital as it allows players to acclimatize to conditions and fine-tune their skills with the pink ball. The absence of Gambhir may pose challenges; however, his commitment to rejoining the team reflects his dedication to both his family and his role as coach.
The upcoming match is particularly significant as India aim to build on their recent success. After a commanding 295-run victory in Perth, they are poised to make a strong statement in the series. The team’s morale remains high, bolstered by their recent achievements and Rohit’s leadership.
