Pakistan won the toss and chose to field first against Australia in the 2nd ODI of the three-game series, hoping to take advantage of the early conditions in Adelaide on Friday (November 8) . Their decision quickly paid off as Shaheen Afridi struck in the third over. Bowling with pace and precision, Shaheen targeted Australia’s opening pair, creating pressure with his tight line and length. In the third over, Jake Fraser-McGurk attempted to take on Shaheen but missed a straight delivery and was trapped lbw for 13 runs off 10 balls. Australia lost their first wicket at 21, giving Pakistan an early breakthrough and momentum.

Babar Azam’s swift catch wraps up Matthew Short’s time at the wicket

In the 7th over, Shaheen clinched his second wicket with Matthew Short’s dismissal, thanks to a brilliant catch by Babar Azam. Shaheen, aiming to unsettle Short, bowled a short and wide delivery – far from his best. Sensing an opportunity, Short tried to slash it through the off side with a powerful cut. However, he failed to get it past the infield and the ball flew off the bat, veering towards cover. Babar, stationed nearby, reacted instantly, diving sharply to his right to complete a clean, low catch, showcasing both his anticipation and safe hands. This catch not only rewarded Shaheen’s effort but also redeemed him after a prior missed opportunity. Short departed for 19 and reduced Australia to 41/2.

Australia’s middle order struggles against Haris Rauf and Mohammad Hasnain

As Steve Smith and Josh Inglis attempted to stabilize the innings, Mohammad Hasnain intervened, removing Smith for 35 with a catch behind to Mohammad Rizwan. Haris Rauf then intensified the pressure by dismissing Inglis for 18 in the 13th over, followed by Marnus Labuschagne’s departure shortly after for just 6 runs. Aaron Hardie’s patient stay ended as Rauf secured his third wicket, catching him behind for 13.

Glenn Maxwell too became the victim of Rauf’s pace. After that Naseem Shah with his accurate line and length removed Mitchell Starc, leaving Australia at 129/7 after 25.2 overs. Adam Zampa and Pat Cummins, the current unbeaten batters, now carry the responsibility of salvaging Australia’s innings, with Pakistan well in control through disciplined bowling and strategic field placements.
