WBBL 2024: Renegades edge out Stars in a thrilling Melbourne Derby
Charis Bekker

In a closely contested Match 19 of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024, Melbourne Renegades registered a 15-run victory over Melbourne Stars at Mebourne’s Junction Oval.

Melbourne Renegades set competitive total despite early struggles

Asked to bat first, the Renegades found themselves in a shaky position as opener Hayley Matthews managed just 12 runs off 20 balls, and Deandra Dottin contributed a quick 7 off 6. However, the Renegades’ innings was stabilized by an impressive knock from Alice Capsey, who smashed 33 runs off just 15 balls, hitting six boundaries to keep the scoreboard moving. Courtney Webb (25 off 29), Naomi Stalenberg (26 not out  off 17) and Nicole Faltum (29 off 23), with their valuable contibutions, took the Renegades to a competitive total of 146/6.

For the Stars, Marizanne Kapp and Annabel Sutherland were the standout bowlers, each claiming two wickets while keeping the runs under control. Kapp was particularly effective, conceding only 22 runs in her four overs, while Sophie Day and Maisy Gibson also chipped in with a wicket each.

Melbourne Stars fall short despite fighting effort

Chasing 147, the Melbourne Stars struggled to build significant partnerships. Yastika Bhatia started cautiously, scoring 22 off 26 balls, while skipper Meg Lanning contributed 22 off 21 with a four and a six. Sutherland (16 off 20) and Kapp (16 off 8) tried to push the scoring rate, but the Stars continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. Deepti Sharma’s 23 off 20 balls provided hope, but her dismissal signaled the end of the chase for the Stars, who fell 15 runs short, finishing on 131/9 in their 20 overs.

For the Renegades, Charis Bekker was highly economical, claiming 1/9 from her four overs, while Milly Illingworth (1/8) and Hayley Matthews (1/26) played supporting roles. Capsey and Dottin also each grabbed a wicket, contributing to a disciplined bowling effort that stifled the Stars’ progress.
