In the 25th match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024, a stunning fielding moment by Hobart HurricanesNicola Carey’s brilliant catch of Adelaide striker’s opener Katie Mack helped shift the momentum in their favor.

The 11th over of the Adelaide Strikers’ innings provided a moment of magic when Hobart Hurricanes’ right-arm leg-spinner Amy Smith bowled to Strikers’ opener, Mack, who struck the ball towards the offside. However, her shot would meet the quick reflexes of Carey, stationed at point. In an astonishing display of fielding, Carey leaped to her left and snatched the ball out of the air, completing a lightning-fast catch. The crowd erupted as the Strikers lost their first wicket, with Mack being dismissed for 14.

Carey’s brilliance wasn’t limited to the field. Later in the match, she proved her worth with the bat as well. Playing a composed and authoritative knock, Carey scored 64 runs off just 46 balls, including seven fours and a six.

Adelaide Strikers fight back but fall short 

Asked to bat first, the Hurricanes set a formidable target with a dominant performance. The highlight of their innings was Lizelle Lee, who struck a brilliant century. Lee’s explosive knock of 103 runs off 59 balls, which included 13 fours and 4 sixes. The Hurricanes finished with an imposing total of 191/2.

In response, the Adelaide Strikers mounted a determined chase, led by Laura Wolvaardt. The South African opener played a crucial role, scoring an unbeaten 63 off 40 balls, which featured seven boundaries and a six. However, despite her efforts, the Hurricanes’ disciplined bowling attack maintained the pressure, and the Strikers could only manage 163/3 in their 20 overs. Ultimately, the Strikers fell short by 28 runs, finishing their chase on 163/3.
