“I don’t need a PR…”: MS Dhoni explains his stance on social media and focus regarding cricket

In an age where social media dominates nearly every aspect of public and private life, legendary Indian cricketer MS Dhoni stands apart.

Known for his calm demeanour and straightforward approach, Dhoni has never been one to engage much with social media platforms. His recent comments during the latest episode of Tread Talks by Eurogrip Tyres shed light on his preference for staying away from the digital spotlight, despite his unparalleled popularity.

MS Dhoni’s remark on social media and public relations

Reflecting on his cricketing journey since his debut in 2004, Dhoni shared how his managers often encouraged him to utilize social media for public relations purposes. However, the former Indian captain, who led the Men in Blue to victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, believes in letting his performance speak for itself.

“I have never been a big fan of social media,” Dhoni said. “Throughout my career, I have had different managers. I started playing in 2004, and Twitter (now X) became popular slightly later, followed by Instagram. All the managers would suggest some PR activities, building this or that. But my response was always the same: if I play good cricket, I don’t need PR.”

Dhoni’s perspective reflects his deep-rooted belief in focusing on his craft rather than seeking attention through digital platforms. His minimal presence on social media contrasts sharply with the trends followed by most modern athletes, who often use these platforms to engage with fans, promote brands, and share glimpses of their personal lives.

Dhoni’s legacy: Beyond boundaries

Despite his limited engagement on social media, Dhoni’s fandom knows no boundaries. His career achievements, leadership skills, and humble personality have earned him admirers across all age groups, regions, and even nationalities. His ability to stay grounded amidst his monumental success has only enhanced his legendary status.

From small-town Ranchi to becoming one of the most celebrated cricketers in the world, Dhoni’s journey has been nothing short of inspiring. He continues to be a role model for countless fans, proving that hard work and dedication can outweigh the need for constant online validation.

Dhoni’s return to the cricket field

At 43, Dhoni is set to return to the cricket field in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the franchise he has captained to multiple championships, retained him ahead of the mega-auction as an uncapped player for ₹4 crore. Fans are eagerly awaiting his return, as he continues to defy age and redefine longevity in professional sports.
