After Bangladesh delivered a commanding performance in the ODI series, achieving a decisive 3-0 clean sweep against Ireland. The visitors made a solid comeback with a thrilling 12-run victory over the hosts in the first T20I of the three-match T20I series at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. The visitors showcased an all-round performance, led by Leah Paul and Ireland’s captain Gaby Lewis, to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Ireland’s batting dominance sets the stage

Winning the toss, Ireland opted to bat first and posted a formidable total of 169/5 in their 20 overs. Lewis, the captain and opener, provided a solid start with a commanding knock of 60 off 42 balls, including seven fours and two sixes. Paul took center stage in the middle order, playing a scintillating innings of 79 off just 45 deliveries. Her knock, laced with 10 fours and two sixes, ensured Ireland set an imposing target of 170. Bangladesh’s bowlers faced a tough outing, though left-arm spinner Nahida Akter stood out with a disciplined spell, conceding just 20 runs in her four overs and picking up a wicket.

Irish bowlers deliver in crunch moments

In response, Bangladesh began their chase positively with openers Dilara Akter and Sobhana Mostary adding crucial runs. Dilara scored a well-crafted 49 off 41 balls, featuring two fours and two sixes, while Sobhana contributed a brisk 46 off 35 balls, with three fours and two sixes. However, the Irish bowlers, led by Orla Prendergast and Arlene Kelly, turned the tide in their favor. Both pacers claimed three wickets each, putting the brakes on Bangladesh’s chase and keeping them to 157/7 in their 20 overs. Their disciplined line and length under pressure proved decisive in sealing the match for Ireland.

Lead against Bangladesh in the series

Paul’s stellar innings not only powered Ireland to a competitive total but also earned her the Player of the Match award. Prendergast and Kelly’s contributions with the ball were instrumental in defending the target despite a spirited effort from the Bangladesh batters. With this victory, Ireland takes an early advantage in the series, setting the stage for an exciting second T20I that will take place on Saturday, December 7, meanwhile Bangladesh will look to bounce back and level the series.
