In an unforgettable moment during the 17th match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 at the Adelaide Oval, Andrew Tye showcased his brilliance with an extraordinary one-handed catch to dismiss Jake Weatherald. This incredible effort left cricket fans and commentators in awe as Perth Scorchers gained early momentum against Adelaide Strikers.
Andrew Tye’s spectacular catch
The dismissal unfolded in the 5th over of the Strikers’ innings, bowled by Jason Behrendorff. Weatherald attempted to charge down the pitch and loft a back-of-length delivery over mid-off. However, Tye had other plans. Positioned at mid-off, Tye leapt at precisely the right moment, extending his right hand to pluck the ball out of the air in a jaw-dropping display of athleticism and reflexes. He landed safely, clutching the ball and leaving the Strikers reeling at a critical juncture.
Weatherald, who managed 8 runs off 8 balls with one boundary, became another casualty in a top-order collapse that saw big names like Chris Lynn and Ollie Pope depart cheaply. The brilliance of Tye’s catch not only dismissed a potential threat but also set the tone for a disciplined and impactful bowling performance by the Scorchers.

Strikers struggle but lower order fights back
Adelaide Strikers, batting first after losing the toss, struggled to build partnerships on a challenging Adelaide Oval pitch. After the early dismissals of Lynn (1 off 3), Pope (1 off 5) and Weatherald (8 off 8), D’Arcy Short (22 off 19) and Alex Ross (20 off 15) attempted to stabilize the Srikers’ innings with brief but valuable contributions. However, their dismissals further deepened the crisis as they found themselves teetering at 58/8.
The lower order, led by Brendan Doggett and Cameron Boyce, mounted a spirited recovery. Doggett, primarily known for his bowling, played a remarkable knock of 47 not out off 39 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes. Boyce provided solid support with a composed 29 off 22, including three fours and a six. Their partnership injected much-needed momentum, enabling the Strikers to post a fighting total of 142/8 in 20 overs.
The Scorchers’ bowlers were relentless, with Jason Behrendorff leading the charge. Behrendorff’s figures of 2/14 in four overs epitomized control and precision. Lance Morris (2/19) and Jhye Richardson (3/29) also made significant contributions, exploiting the conditions effectively. While Tye managed a wicket, his catch stole the spotlight despite an expensive spell conceding 46 runs.
