In a disappointing turn of events for Team India captain Rohit Sharma, his struggles continued during the fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). After a lacklustre performance, where he managed to score only 3 and 9 runs in both innings, fans took to social media to express their frustration, with many brutally suggesting it might be time for him to retire.

Another tough day for Rohit Sharma

Rohit’s dismissal came early on Day 5, in the 16th over of India’s seconf innings. Facing the first ball of the over, bowled by Pat Cummins, Rohit attempted to flick a delivery that was angling in on the off-stump and then straightened slightly. Unfortunately, he only managed to produce a leading edge.

The ball flew towards gully, where Mitchell Marsh pulled off a stunning catch. Initially, Marsh tried to reverse-cup the ball over his head, but it popped up from his hands. Displaying exceptional reflexes and awareness, Marsh adjusted quickly to grab the ball near his left shoulder, completing a brilliant effort.

The dismissal marked another success for Cummins, who once again got the better of his opposite number. Rohit, who looked composed during his 40-ball stay and had seemingly settled into his innings, was dismissed for just 9 runs. This breakthrough was exactly what Australia needed at that stage of the game, as it undid Rohit’s earlier hard work. The Indian skipper’s latest performance adds to his dismal tally of just 31 runs in five innings during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, averaging a mere 6.2.

Here’s how fans reacted on X (formerly Twitter):

Earlier in the day, Australia finished their second innings at 234 with Nathan Lyon (40 off 55) being the last man to be dismissed. India need to pull a record chase of 340 to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series and keep their World Test Championship (WTC) final hopes alive.
