In a pivotal move ahead of the fifth and final Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, reports have surfaced indicating that Dhruv Jurel is set to replace Rishabh Pant as India’s wicketkeeper. This decision comes on the heels of Pant’s disappointing performances and ongoing fitness concerns during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
Rishabh Pant’s recent struggles
Pant’s form has been under scrutiny, having scored only 154 runs in four matches, averaging a mere 22. His scores throughout the series have been inconsistent, with innings of 37, 1, 21, 28, 9, 28, and 30. This lacklustre performance has led to growing speculation about his place in the starting XI for the upcoming Test against Australia. The Indian team’s management appears to be weighing their options seriously, given that Pant’s recent outings have not lived up to expectations.
The emergence of Dhruv Jurel
In contrast, Jurel has made a compelling case for selection. He recently delivered impressive performances for India A against Australia A at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, scoring back-to-back fifties with innings of 80 and 68. His ability to handle fast bowling and challenging pitch conditions has positioned him as a strong contender for the wicketkeeper role. Despite limited opportunities at the international level – having played only one Test this season where he scored 11 and 1 – Jurel’s domestic form has been noteworthy. He also scored 93 runs for Rajasthan in the Irani Trophy against Mumbai, showcasing his potential as both a keeper and a middle-order batter.

A shift in strategy
While Jurel may not possess the same explosive batting style as Pant, his reliability could provide much-needed stability to India’s middle order. The team is reportedly looking for options that can enhance their performance in conditions that favour seam movement and spin bowling.
