Celebrations are underway in the Australian camp as their team clinched a historic series win against India to end the decade of dominance form the visiting side and win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Amidst appreciation from the entire cricketing community, the Australian captain Pat Cummins showered praises on his squad in a rare display of affection after victory in the SCG Test.

Australia’s remarkable journey in BGT 2024-25

The Australian team’s journey in the Border-Gavaskar 2024-25 has been a rollercoaster of emotions and a test of team’s temperament. The home side were dominated by India at Perth after the visitors declared their second innings on 487/6 and restricted the Aussies to 238.

The home side made a comeback in the second Test- a day-night encounter between the two sides in which the Australian team ultimately came back to winning ways. A tipping point in the series came in Brisbane as Australia were close to a victory but a valiant effort from the Indian tailenders and rain interruptions saved the visiting side and the match ended in a draw.

From there, the Australian team never looked back in the series as they fought their hearts out in Melbourne to seal a Boxing Day Test match win and dominate India in the final Test to end their decade of dominance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The Australian skipper was all praises for his team’s heroic journey and went on to point out the effort his team had put in to seal a historic series win. Cummins pointed out the need of not changing anything significant after their defeat at Perth which became a difference-maker throughout the series.

“I think more importantly it’s what you don’t change. Of course, after a loss like that (in Perth), you reassess where you’re at. But we’re really happy with how most of the guys were going. I thought we had a bad week, but I thought our game plans, methods, selection, all that was pretty much where we wanted to be, just maybe our execution was a little bit off,” Cummins remarked.

Australia to defend the Test mace against South Africa in WTC final

With a 3-1 series win, Australia have clinched a spot in the ICC World Test Championship final, due to be held in June this year at the Lord’s. The Aussies will look forward to defending their Test mace which they earned after defeating India in the finals of the last cycle against a determined South Africa who have already saved a spot in the WTC final.

Cummins, pointing out his team’s desire to remain the Test champions, further remarked on the importance of the trophy for the squad and highlighted the need of keeping the test mace in the Australian trophy cabinet.

“It’s huge for us. We talk about the World Test championship a lot. You know, it’s the trophy we’re really proud to hold. So we want to go back and defend it. I think it’s a great tournament in that you’ve got to play well consistently and across all different conditions against different teams and yeah, it’s great to be there again, can’t wait to get over there,” Cummins elucidated.

Australia are yet to play against Sri Lanka in the current WTC cycle. A series win for the Aussies can very much put them in the top-spot of the WTC standings ahead of the showdown against South Africa.
